Let’s Talk About Ketosis

Low-carb diets result in a process called ketosis. Any time you significantly restrict your carbohydrate intake, ketosis results. Ketosis essentially occurs when your body burns fat for energy. During ketosis, your blood will have an unusually high level of ketones. Many individuals who are eventually diagnosed with diabetes first experience weight loss because their body can’t utilize glucose, so they eventually begin breaking down fat and their blood ketone levels become elevated. Weight loss can actually be an indication of diabetes for these individuals. For individuals on a low-carb diet, the process is similar. In their case, they simply don’t have enough glucose in their bloodstream because of their limited intake of carbohydrates.

Ketosis Isn’t Always Bad

Don’t automatically assume that ketosis is as dangerous as some health experts suggest. The answer really depends on who you ask, but for most healthy individuals a low-carb diet shouldn’t present that much of a health risk. For individuals who suffer from diabetes or heart problems, a low-carb diet might not be a good choice. Such individuals should really diet under the strict supervision of their doctors anyway. The general population, however, usually doesn’t need to be preoccupied with the possible negative effects of a low-carb diet.


The Side Effects of a Low-Carb Diet

There are some important side effects that you should be aware of if you are on a low-carb diet. Ketosis can cause a low-carb dieter to feel sluggish and even lethargic. Constipation and dehydration are other possible side effects.

If you have any concerns whether or not a low-carb diet is the right choice for you, check with your doctor. Many dieters have had success with using a low-carb diet, so they are definitely not as bad as some critics believe.
