What’s The Deal With Liposuction?

Is Liposuction Really A Permanent Weight Loss Solution?

Let’s see – would you rather spend months, maybe even years, dieting and exercising to lose the extra pounds or would you rather just suffer for a week or so and have all of that nasty fat removed surgically? Many people think the decision between losing weight naturally and having liposuction performed is actually this simple. Unfortunately, liposuction isn’t quite so cut and dry.

The Myth

Unfortunately, there are some people who believe that liposuction is a method of permanent weight loss. Because liposuction permanently removes fat cells, these people think that it is impossible to gain weight in the areas liposuction is performed on. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

The Facts

Yes, liposuction permanently removes fat cells and contrary to what some people will try to tell you, your body will not produce more. The body stops producing fat cells after puberty. However, the funny thing about fat cells is that they EXPAND.

If you keep eating too much after you have liposuction, the remaining fat cells are going to get bigger and you’re going to gain weight all over again. Because of this, liposuction is not an alternative to a healthy diet and regular exercise and a good plastic surgeon will not usually perform liposuction until someone has already lost the majority of their excess weight.
